CVD Diamond Tool is a cutting tool made with synthetic single crystal diamond (SCD) that is lab-grown from chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method using a similar process to CVD coating of carbide cutting tools. A diamond seed is placed in a special vacuum
furnace where a hydrocarbon gas (usually methane) is injected. A microwave beam then heats up the gas into its plasma state, where the carbon atoms separate from the molecule and deposit onto the seed. Layer by layer,
the carbon atoms form pieces of diamond. The process can take up to several weeks depending on the desired size.
CVD Diamond Tool is considered to be superior to monocrystal diamond (MCD) tool due to crystal structure and growth direction. Although the raw material is more costly, a CVD Diamond Tool is able to produce
a better surface finish on the part. CVD Diamond Tool is a highly specialized cutting tool and requires experts to design and manufacture properly.
